The media-source privilege is a privilege allowing a reporter or other media representative to withhold disclosure of a source's identity. This privilege does not have the legal standing of other similar privileges such as the attorney-client privilege. It may aid in the protection of the First Amendment. It afforded journalists "shield laws". Information considered probative and information that cannot be obtained through alternative means will not be protected and will be evaluated independently by the presiding judge outside the presence of the jury.
