Cite at least three considerations that must be followed when replacing aluminum bolt-on components vs. steel bolt-on components.
What will be an ideal response?
• One-Time Fasteners – Some of the fasteners used to attach aluminum panels to steel structures may have special coatings such as Dacromet and sealers applied to them which becomes damaged during the removal of the fastener. Any fasteners with damaged coatings must be replaced when removed.
• Insulating Materials – Any insulating materials such as adhesive or plastic grommets at the attaching points of a bolt-on aluminum panel must be re-installed or duplicated during the re-installation of the panel.
• NVH Foams – Aluminum fenders have an NVH foam material applied between the fender and the A-pillar area to reduce wind noise. When working with panels which have had NVH foam applied caution must be exercised to avoid causing any damage to panels which will be re-used.
• Hand Tools – Should be used to install fasteners into aluminum panels to avoid damaging the softer aluminum threads.
