To an observer on Earth, the Sun at noon (12:00 pm) reaches its most northern or southern position in the sky. During the winter solstice, which occurs on or around December 22, the Sun is directly overhead of the Tropic of Capricorn at 23.5° south latitude and is in the reverse position of the summer solstice in both hemispheres. During the summer solstice, the Arctic Circle experiences around six months of daylight, while during the summer solstice, it experiences around six months of darkness.
