Identify the specialized receptor types associated with touch and explain how they are related to our perception of pain. Give an example of each pain stimulus identified.
What will be an ideal response?
There are four specialized receptors that are identified by the type of stimulus to which they respond-pressure, pain, heat, and cold. The pain receptors respond to the same type of information as the other specialized receptors-pressure, heat, and cold-but only when the stimulus is excessive. For example, we feel pain with excessive heat. Although student examples will vary, they should include the same type of information. A heat receptor will respond if you touch a curling iron when you have just turned it on and it is warm, but your pain receptors will respond if you touch the curling iron when it is fully heated. Your cold receptors will respond if you touch something cool, such as a metal surface. If that same metal surface is put in a subzero freezer, you will feel pain when you touch it. Lastly, you will feel pressure if you are getting a massage, but if the pressure becomes more extreme, as with a deep-tissue massage, you will feel pain.
