An SDN virtualizes parts of the physical network so that it can be more quickly and easily reconfigured. This is accomplished by separating the control plane from the data plane. The control plane consists of one or more SDN servers and performs the complex functions such as routing and security checks. It also defines the data flows through the data plane.
