Why are some periodontal patients more susceptible to develop systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus?

What will be an ideal response?

General health affects a patient's resistance to the development of periodontal diseases. For example, patients with diabetes mellitus are more susceptible to the development of periodontal disease because of a reduced host immune response. The host (the body) differs between individuals and plays an important role in the susceptibility to diseases. Diabetics have a reduced immune response because of a defect in the function of the polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs; white blood cells), which are responsible for chemotaxis (signals other inflammatory cells to come to the infected area) and phagocytosis (engulfing of bacteria). Prevention and control of periodontal disease must be considered an integral part of diabetes control.
