The Kansas City studies had an impact on several traditional views about police patrol work. Comment on and explain the study and specifically the affect they had on preventative patrol and traditional response to calls for service
What will be an ideal response?
This was the first large-scale scientific study of law enforcement practices. Sponsored by the Police Foundation, it focused on the practice of preventive patrol. It drastically changed the way we looked routine patrol and moved to directed patrol; conventional managerial wisdom about patrol work was wrong. Citizens didn't seem to notice the change in patrol patterns in the two areas where patrol frequency was changed. Surveys conducted at the conclusion of the expe-riment showed no difference in citizens' fear of crime before and after the study. This study has been credited with beginning the now-established tradition of scientific studies of policing.
