Explain the three approaches to addressing the crime of sexual assault through history
What will be an ideal response?
The first alternative approach to rape was to blame the rapist through the lens of mental health. Rapists were seen as mentally ill or disturbed. It was believed women would be protected if sexual predators were in prison and then received intense treatment. The second approach was to address women most at risk for rape, which tend to be women who are young. Education on risk reduction strategies such as being aware of date rape drugs, self-defense training, clear communication when dating, and other services such as counseling or medical treatment. Finally, an approach to gender inequity in social institutions was developed. This approach examines the impact of sexual exploitation of women in the media, how children are raised to fit gender roles, and other traditional gender roles that support male aggression on women.
