Describe an example that shows that even after birth, the brain can undergo reorganization.

What will be an ideal response?

One example is that in patients with syndactyly who undergo surgery to separate the fingers, their somatosensory cortex reorganizes in approximately one week so that each finger is then represented independently. In patients who have had a body part amputated, pain can be experienced in the amputated body part. This "phantom pain" is explained through reorganization that results in the brain cells that control other parts of the body growing into brain areas that represented the missing body part. Another example is that kittens who were raised in the absence of vertical lines failed to respond to vertical rods later in life, and their visual cortical cells did not respond to vertical lines.
