Two crosslinkable polyester resins are being considered for use as the resin in making a glass fiber reinforced tank for processing various chemical reactions. One of the polyesters is made from a monomer having 4 carbons between the reactive end groups and the other is made from a monomer having 8 carbons between the reactive end groups. Otherwise the materials are the same. Compare the
mechanical and chemical properties expected from each of the two resins, especially for this application, and explain your reasoning.
What will be an ideal response?
The 8 carbon chain is going to have less reactive sites than the 4 carbon chain per volume unit because of this crosslinking will result in much more dense material, higher stiffness, and lower toughness. Because of the higher density this material will also have lower chemical reactivity.
