Please review how Morgen recommended to implement MI with an older adult client.

What will be an ideal response?

MI can be adjusted for older adult use in some potential ways, but the counselor must be specifically trained in older adult SUD treatment as there are some critical differences when working with the older adult. MI can be used to assist the older adult to recognize the existence of a substance use issue in need of change. For a host of reasons, older adults may not notice the extent of their substance use. Furthermore, many other older adults may not have a diagnosable SUD but rather engage in risky or excessive substance use. Consequently, Cooper (2012) advocated for the integration of psychoeducation into the MI process. Though advice giving is typically done sparingly and with client consent, the counselor can facilitate this educational dialogue in the following manner: 1) Understand any physical and medical problems, and the associated medication regimen, the client must face; 2) inquire how these illnesses, physical limitations, and medications influence their day; and 3) see how and why the problematic substance use enters the picture and respect the benefits the client perceives from this use.
