Describe cold cases and discuss the difficulties associated with getting a conviction in a cold case.
What will be an ideal response?
Cold cases are usually serious crimes that are no longer being actively investigated because more recent crimes are necessarily the priority. From time to time, they may be reopened if new physical evidence is available or if a new witness comes forward. Although there are occasionally cold case successes, only 1 in 20 results in an arrest and 1 in 100 in conviction. Convictions are difficult for a number of reasons, including uncooperative witnesses, witnesses or victims may be deceased or unable to be located; the suspect being deceased or immune from prosecution for additional charges due to a prior plea bargain; and DNA results that are inconclusive.
