Compare and contrast the long-form and short-form algorithms for solving multi-digit division problems
What will be an ideal response?
The advantage of the long-form algorithm is that it presents a clear interpretation of what is involved in division. The disadvantage is that most upper-elementary teachers expect their students to use the short-form algorithm. The advantage of the short-form algorithm is the relatively easy set of preskills that must be mastered prior to introducing multi-digit division problems. The disadvantage of the short-form algorithm is that students may not understand why it works.
