An indictable offense is a more serious crime (like an American Felony) and requires a trial by a judge and jury in Crown court (analogous to an American district court). Sentences for indictable offenses vary from straight probation to life in prison (there is no death penalty in the United Kingdom). At the termination of a trial (or plea bargain) for an indictable offense the defendant is referred to probation authorities for a presentence report.
