To what factors do demographers attribute the decline in birthrates? How has the economic view of children changed?

What will be an ideal response?

Demographers have been surprised by the rapid decline in the fertility rate below the replacement rate in many nations and attribute the change to changing attitudes towards religion, greater labor market opportunities for women outside the household, and the increasing cost of raising children. It appears that the economic view of children has changed from one of them being an economic asset for families, as was the case in countries with an agricultural economy, to one of them being an economic liability that is costly to raise to adulthood, as is the case for nations that have modernized.
