Provide an example of the value of triangulating data sources for a given OM process situation.
What will be an ideal response?
First, there must be a rationale for employing multiple data collection measures to address a given client’s OM process. A self-report may be the only measure needed for monitoring alcohol use before a client enters a residential treatment program. If the client has been abstinent of all alcohol consumption after the first six weeks of recovery, then there is no need for additional measures to determine alcohol use, and a new change goal will be addressed. As an example of triangulated data collection sources once the client’s new change goal has been developed: The focus would be more appropriate if each source could affirm if a trigger behavior exists by frequency, intensity, and duration of thoughts to consume alcohol. A selfreport for frequency, a standardized measure for anxiety, and administrative records to confirm the client’s legal history may all contribute to understanding and summarizing the client’s patterns of behavior that drive that individual to return to drinking alcohol.
