How has Mitochondrial DNA proven to be such a boon to forensics?

What will be an ideal response?

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) has allowed forensic evaluations to be conducted on evidence that could not be analyzed using older DNA analysis techniques. mtDNA is very sensitive to contamination and must be handled with considerable care. In the future it may be possible to use older and smaller samples of DNA and obtain more accurate results. This can be useful in missing person cases because while DNA degrades over time mtDNA can be extracted from bones and teeth long after the remains have skeletonized.
