Explain how the controversial expansion of large-scale hog confinements (factory farms) in Iowa contributes to each of the following: 1) the politics of treadmills and 2) the invisible communities. Give examples.

What will be an ideal response?

Large-scale hog confinements (CAFOs when they are over 1000 animal units)
are an example of the gradual monopolization of very few capitalists via the treadmill of
production. There is competitive pressure for production faced by firms that
disadvantage workers. So in CAFOs, humane treatment of hogs and workers is
disregarded as each firm tries to produce more goods more cheaply than others. In the
meantime, the economic costs of these CAFOs are externalized in a way that is quite
invisible to consumers and distant capitalists, but are very visible to local rural residents.
These externalities include air pollution, water pollution, drastic decreases in residential
property values, and demand copious amounts of tax payer money to clean up these
massive confinements when the industrialists are through with them. The market
doesn’t show those costs because politically the capitalists are motivated to pressure
government regulators to keep their costs of production low, while the external costs to
community members and animals drastically grow.
