Paralegals will find themselves being put in circumstances where they have to
come very close to practicing law. Attorneys may say it is acceptable for paralegals to
inform clients of fees for certain tasks, but this can cause a problem if a paralegal quotes a
fee incorrectly or if the client does not give the full picture of what is really needed to the
paralegal. If the attorney is always gone, there is no opportunity for the proper supervision of
the paralegals’ work. The attorney may sign a paralegal’s work without properly reviewing
and revising it, and the attorney may even ask the paralegal to sign the attorney’s name to
pleadings for the sake of not missing deadlines. If the attorney is not actively present, the
paralegal could end up managing the workload and finances of the law firm, making
decisions on behalf of the firm that are clearly the attorney’s responsibility.
