Antipsychotic drugs are used in the treatment of schizophrenia. Typical antipsychotics were discovered in the 1950’s and marketed as Haldol and Thorazine. These drugs work by blocking receptors in the brain’s dopamine pathways, and are effective at reducing or eliminating delusions and hallucinations. However, typical antipsychotics are largely ineffective in treating negative symptoms of schizophrenia. Moreover, side effects such as sluggishness, tremors, weight gain, and tardive dyskinesia can be substantial and long-lasting. Atypical antipsychotics, such as Clozaril or Risperdal, were discovered in the 1990’s, and work by affecting dopamine, serotonin, and other neurotransmitters. These drugs are effective in alleviating negative symptoms of schizophrenia and produce fewer side effects than typical antipsychotics (although undesirable side effects remain).
