Explain how taste relates to the nutritional content (or safety) of food.

What will be an ideal response?

The five primary tastes that are detected via our taste receptors primarily inform us of nutrient presence or safety of things we try to eat. Items that taste sweet typically contain energy (carbohydrates) such as fruits. Items that taste salty contain salts that are needed for cell communication in our nervous systems and the rest of our bodies. Items that stimulate umami receptors contain protein or amino acids that are needed for cell repair and function. Bitter- and sour-tasting items are generally things we should avoid. Items that taste sour often have spoiled or are rotting, while items that taste bitter might be toxic for us to consume.
