Since the development of perceptual skills is enhanced by the interactions among the various perceptual abilities, a learner's functioning in the areas of perception and sensory-motor integration can be best assessed through behavioral observations of everyday activities. A teacher can formulate and investigate a variety of hypotheses for the learner's difficulty with perceptual tasks within an actual academic context, evaluating the component skills involved with functions such as following directions; copying letters, including both far- and near-point copying; writing and drawing tasks; listening tasks; and identifying letters and letter sounds. Such an assessment process would look at specific component skills involved with sensory encoding, perceptual integration, storage and retrieval of cognitive abstractions from long-term memory, and motoric output/response. The information from such assessment can then be used to formulate learning outcomes and relevant instructional plans.
