Describe how the Concept Attainment Model may be used to develop generalization and discrimination skills, including close in and far out nonexamples

What will be an ideal response?

The Concept Attainment Model helps students learn how to generalize and discriminate in their understandings of concepts. Generalization refers to a person's ability to identify critical attributes in an example and associate them with a concept (i.e., examples of numbers with only two factors are grouped as prime numbers). Discrimination refers to a person's ability to identify critical attributes in a nonexample and recognize them as not being associated with a concept. Nonexamples vary in degree of non-relatedness as close in and far out nonexamples. Close in nonexamples exhibit some but not all the characteristics of the concept (e.g., a giraffe is not a horse), while far out nonexamples demonstrate fewer or none of the characteristics (e.g., a donkey is not a horse).
