The ripple counter counts up one bit per clock cycle (see Figure 14.13). Each JK flip-flop in the counter is held in its toggle state; however, the external clock pulse train is connected only to the first flip-flop in the chain. The clock input of each successive flip-flop is the output of the previous flip-flop. In this way, all of the flip-flops aside from the first flip-flop only trigger when the previous flip-flop toggles. The result is that the effect of the toggling clock pulse train ripples through the chain of flip-flops.
