Should companies have the right to refuse their services to LGB individuals? Please explain your answer.
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary as students may have varying opinions on this topic. Students must use text-based content and logic to support their answer. One example a student may use is AT&T speaking out about Russia's antigay laws both before and during the Sochi Winter Olympics. AT&T viewed it as beneficial to their company to position themselves as being for gay equality based on their consumer base and personal values. Conversely, other companies such as JCPenny which pulled advertisements from the Ellen DeGeners show when she came out. On one side, students may choose to argue that companies should not be allowed to exclude LGB individuals just as they shouldn't be allowed to exclude ethnic minorities. On another side, students may choose to discuss religious freedom to argue that companies cannot be forced to go against personal values.
