Pioneer species are among the first to colonize a new substrate after a severe disturbance that creates the conditions for primary succession. Pioneer plant species usually have airborne dispersal mechanisms such as windblown seeds or spores. Pioneer species such as lichens begin the process of soil formation, paving the way for other vegetation and eventually animals to establish.
