How will social media impact political campaigns and political engagement in the future?

The textbook profiles "Julia," the character in the 2012 presidential campaign and how
response to the slideshow about her was felt across social media. Twitter and
Facebook were also used extensively by both sides in the presidential election. These
efforts might go a long way toward alleviating recent trends in declining voter turnout
and increased voter apathy among some parts of the population. In fact, as the
textbook points out, voter turnout among the young has been high in the most recent
elections and these groups of people are the heaviest users of social media. It seems
reasonable to think that campaigning on and with social media will continue to be a
crucial part of American politics moving forward.
