Discuss the interpersonal needs filled by teams. Include in your answer the importance of fulfilling these needs
What will be an ideal response?
Teams serve social, or relationship, goals. First, relationships are formed that
help employees feel more connected to the team. These personal relationships help make the link between the employee and the organization stronger. Many people talk about the
organization as a collection of individuals with whom they work. It is those personal
relationships that keep them connected to the organization and give the organization a
personality. Second, individuals receive support from others to face difficult challenges.
This supportive climate can help members solve personal as well as work-related
problems. Colleagues are a good source of comfort when you are facing a difficult
decision, an unusual task, or some new problem.
Third, the team provides opportunities for members to demonstrate leadership abilities.
Working with a team gives you a chance to step forward and organize tasks as well as
provide vision for the future. Leadership demonstrated in a team can be repeated as the
employee's level or responsibility shifts to include a larger portion of the organization.
Finally, teams provide a setting where new ideas can be tested before going "public."
Trying out ideas in a team can give an indication of how those ideas might be received by
a larger audience. People seem to be more accepting of failed ideas in this smaller setting
than when an idea is launched "publicly."
We need interpersonal relationships in order to feel engaged, to test our ideas and
abilities, and for moral support. Without team interaction we are isolates, cut off from the
advantages of teamwork. We need the support of others to face life's challenges both at
work and in our personal lives.
