Define life expectancy. Describe a challenge presented by the dramatic increase in life expectancy in the United States.
What will be an ideal response?
Life expectancy refers to the average number of years that a person born in a particular year can expect to live. Laura Carstensen recently described the challenges and opportunities presented by this dramatic increase in life expectancy. In her view, the remarkable increase in the number of people living to an old age has happened so quickly that science, technology, and social expectations have not kept pace. She proposes that the challenge is to change from a world constructed mainly for young people to a world that is more compatible and supportive for the increasing number of people living to age 100 and beyond.
