Discuss how correlational research is conducted compared to an experiment. Discuss advantages and disadvantages of both.
What will be an ideal response?
Correlational research is limited to investigating associations between characteristics, while experiments are used to determine the causes of a characteristic. In order to determine causes, experiments involve experimenter manipulation of conditions/variables and observations of the resulting effects. Through this manipulation, experiments can control for extraneous variables that could result in incorrect conclusions. Correlations do not involve experimenter manipulation and instead entail observations of preexisting conditions. Experiments are able to identify causes of characteristics but can be difficult to conduct in all situations because some variables cannot be manipulated (such as gender). Correlations can be conducted in a wider range of situations to address many research questions, but they cannot identify causes of a characteristic.
