Explain what happens in a single cylinder of a reciprocating piston compressor during the intake stroke.

What will be an ideal response?

As the piston moves down in the cylinder, a low-pressure area is created on top of the piston and below the intake and exhaust valves. The higher pressure on top of the intake valve causes it to open, admitting refrigerant vapor into the cylinder. The exhaust valve is held closed because the much higher pressure on top of this valve, as opposed to the low pressure below it, prevents it from opening during the intake stroke.
