The term readiness refers to social and academic skills children need to succeed in school. Children who enter school ready to learn will have knowledge of letters, numbers, the sounds that make up words, number concepts, the methods behind scientific investigations, cultural knowledge, and language. In addition, readiness skills require self-regulation skills, including the ability to pay attention in groups, follow directions, and enter and sustain play with others.
