The ideal answer should include:
- Qualifications: Does the author have the necessary credentials? When researching, perform an Internet search to check out the writer's expertise and credentials.
- Currency: When was the information published, and when were the sources that are cited in the article written? To ensure currency, check important figures in an almanac or a frequently updated source, like FedStats.
- Fairness: Does the author present the information fairly and objectively, or is there a bias favoring one position? To ensure fairness, go to the home page of the website on which the material is published and find out if it is sponsored by any organization. Also, review a range of research on the subject to see how multiple experts view the issue.
- Sufficiency: Is the information presented sufficient enough to establish the claim or conclusion? To ensure sufficiency, compare the information provided in the source to the conclusion you are trying to make.
- Accuracy: Is the information presented accurate? It is not always easy to determine if research is accurate, but it will become easier as you do more research. Compare the article in question to other research and check for consistency.
