How are kinesics (facial expressions), chronemics, and vocalics used in computer-mediated communication (CMC)? Be able to describe how different nonverbal cues may be interpreted

What will be an ideal response?

• Kinesics: Emoticons are added to CMC to show emotion, such as smiles (?) and frowns (?). They represent your emotional feeling about a situation, much as your own facial expression would. Without the emoticon added, the receiver of the CMC may misinterpret the message as matter-of-fact ("I can't come over") or may miss a joke ("I'm so mad at you").
• Chronemics: Frequency of messaging, the duration and response time of messages, and the time of day messages are sent all indicate the important use of time. Delays in response to a text message may be misinterpreted as disinterest or anger, when perhaps the respondent has not had the opportunity to return the message or some other "good" excuse. Text messages and email sent at night are perceived to be more intimate and equal than those sent earlier in the day. When the recipient is someone you do not wish to convey intimacy or equality to (i.e., a teacher, a student), misinterpretation may have serious consequences.
• Vocalics: Tone of voice, volume, accenting, and pausing are achieved through capital letters, exclamation points, question marks, and other punctuation. These can easily be misinterpreted as shouting or aggression that is not intended.
