Describe Baumrind's four parenting styles, and provide a discussion of the behaviors commonly observed in children raised in each of these styles.

What will be an ideal response?

(1) Authoritarian: Parents who are authoritarian are described as strict. They have high demands for their children, expect them to follow the rules without question, and don't usually explain the reasoning behind the rules. If rules aren't followed, the child is spanked or otherwise punished. Authoritarian parents are less responsive to their children's needs and are low on warmth. Children of authoritarian parents tend to have lower self-esteem and may be angry and aggressive. (2) Authoritative: These parents expect children to follow rules and behave appropriately but are much more likely to discuss the reasons for the rules and to listen to the child. Authoritative parents are warm and nurturing and encourage children to solve problems and make decisions. Authoritative parents are often called balanced because, although they are demanding, they are still responsive. Children with authoritative parents tend to score higher in self-esteem, well-being, academic achievement, and physical health. (3) Permissive: Sometimes called indulgent, these parents often give in to their child's every wish. They make few demands and typically do not discipline. Permissive parents are highly involved with their children but act more like friends than parents. Children from permissive parents tend to be impulsive and spoiled, and may depend on others to meet their needs rather than being self-initiating. (4) Uninvolved: This style is also called neglectful parenting. These parents may meet the child's basic needs (food, housing, etc.), but beyond that they show little interest in the child's life. These parents are low in warmth, support, and communication. They rarely set rules or limits and rarely discipline.
