Discuss convenience sampling and random sampling.

What will be an ideal response?

The most common method of collecting subjects for small studies is called convenience sampling, a method by which volunteers are approached and asked to participate.  This type of sampling is often conducted in shopping malls or other places where people might congregate.  Of course, those that volunteer to participate may not represent the general population because 1) they are frequenting the place where the study data are collected and 2) their volunteer status may make them less similar to others who do not volunteer.  This type of sampling may impair the external validity of the study.

A more formal method of selecting a sample involves random sampling, a systematic method of approaching individuals to participate in the study.  In this situation, the random aspect involves a statistical method that allows every person in the target population to have an equal opportunity to participate.  Studies based on random sampling are more likely to represent the target population and reduce study biases due to sampling.
