How did Bacon's Rebellion affect the American colonies?
What will be an ideal response?
Nathaniel Bacon's rebellion against the older Virginia elite under Governor William Berkeley had pitted small farmers, landless men, and indentured servants against the colonial aristocracy. Once a squadron of English warships and the death of Bacon brought an end to the civil war-like conditions in the colony, Virginia's ruling elite consolidated their power and restored property qualifications for voting. But to curry the favor of poorer whites, they also reduced taxes, pursued a more aggressive Indian policy to open western lands for small farmers, and shifted away from the importation of indentured servants—who would eventually become freemen and demand their share of the colony's prosperity—to the perpetual servitude of African slaves.
