Answer: Before whole blood can be given to the patient as a transfusion, the patient and the unit of blood must both be typed (for blood type) and crossmatched (to each other) to assure compatibility and avoid a transfusion reaction (hemolysis of red blood cells due to incompatibility of blood types).
