Examine you are conducting a study of an inner city that is ethnically and racially diverse. Why you would conduct a stratified random sample as compared to a simple random sample? Explain your answer using two or three sentences.
What will be an ideal response?
If you conducted a simple random sample you might have a disproportionate number of participants from each ethnic/racial group. If you stratified your sample, you might be able to get the actual proportion of each racial/ethnic group into your study. For example if you conducted a simple random sample, you might get 25% white, 25% black, 25% latino, and 25% other. However, imagine that the population was 50% black, 12% white, and so on. A stratified sample would be useful to make sure the sample is representative of that population of interest.
