Outline the mechanism of type I hypersensitivities
What will be an ideal response
The mechanism of type I hypersensitivities is as follows: On the first encounter with antigen, IgE type antibody is
produced. Mast cells/basophils express receptors for the Fc portion of IgE, so when IgE is produced the mast
cell/basophils become coated or sensitized with IgE. This is not sufficient to cause degranulation. During a
subsequent antigen exposure when the IgE molecules on the mast cells become cross-linked with antigen, the
signal is sent for the mast cells to degranulate. The granules contain inflammatory mediators such as histamines,
which are responsible for the characteristics of the type I hypersensitivity.
