Defi ne biotechnology and give examples of traditional biotechnology and molecular biology-based biotechnology.
What will be an ideal response?
Biotechnology is broadly defi ned as the use of living organisms or the products of these
organisms to benefi t humankind. Some of the examples for traditional biotechnology are
production of alcoholic beverages, cheese production, and the use of soil microorganism
for compost production. Examples for molecular biology-based biotechnology are cloned
enzymes from bacteria and fungi added to detergents to break down protein stains (for
example, blood, cloning the gene for spider silk into goats, and cloning human genes for
the mass production of pharmaceutical products such as insulin). Based on what they have
heard about biotechnology, hold a general discussion with your students to fi nd out their
preconceived defi nitions and examples for biotechnology before you assign them the
chapter.
