When students use a cliché in shared or guided writing, ask them to replace it with something more original. Validate improved independent writing by having students share their writing with others. If they do not want to share, you can read and praise their writing without identifying them. Students learn that the first thing that comes to their mind is often the first thing that comes to the minds of others, and they should avoid such words and phrases in their writing.
