Some of the problems affecting police recruitment today include exploding growth, a competitive job market, various national catastrophes, and the struggle to retain diversity. Other challenges include issue such as today’s higher incidence of obesity, major debt, drug use, and criminal records that are found among potential recruits. The requirement that applicants have a minimum number of college credits also may reduce the applicant pool.
To counter declining interest in policing as a career, recruiters focus on the positive aspects of policing, such as solid insurance, excellent retirement plans, long vacations, and opportunities for advancement. Some departments have redesigned their recruitment focus to emphasize those factors that play a key role in many people’s decision to enter police work. The New York State Police has increased its recruitment of female troopers by emphasizing the opportunities available for women in the NYSP, by using the entire force as recruiters, and by seeking applicants at nontraditional locations. Other agencies have attempted to develop a larger applicant pool by seeking applicants outside their own geographic area, having downloadable application forms on the Web, lowering the minimum age, and allowing some applicants to substitute work experience for college credits.
