Provide examples of the infamous case of H.M. and damage to the hippocampus as initially reported by Milner (1964).
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: H.M. was a patient with hippocampal brain damage. H.M. was given a mirror-drawing task over several days, in which he had to trace figures while watching his hand in a mirror. H.M.’s performance was quite poor initially but improved after several days of practice, despite the fact that he had not recollection of ever performing the task before. The enhancement of performance as a result of practice is a reflection of intact implicit (procedural) memory, whereas H.M.’s failure to recall previously performing the task is a reflection of a lack of explicit memory.
