Explain the significance of the US Surgeon General's Report on Physical Activity and Health.

What will be an ideal response?

Responses will vary; in 1996, the US Surgeon General released a report on Physical Activity and Health that said the lack of physical activity in this country is a serious public health problem. The general recommendation for health benefits was for people to accumulate at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per day on most days of the week. This level of activity was shown to prevent premature death and unnecessary illness for those who are not physically active. The report also indicated that regular physical activity and exercise can reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, osteoporotic fractures, reduce the symptoms of depression, anxiety, and improve mood. The report also indicated that most Americans, including women, the elderly, less educated, and less affluent, do not get adequate levels of physical activity to maintain good health.
