What kinds of COPPS efforts are being directed toward the identification, prevention, and suppression of gangs?
What will be an ideal response?
No "cookie-cutter" approach will work; gangs are particular to time and place, so a problem analysis of the crime problems at hand is critical. Four types of activities are used to address gangs: prevention, intervention, suppression, and comprehensive strategies (each is discussed at length in the chapter). Cities where success has been achieved have also had their efforts led in a combined effort by the city council and police chief; had law enforcement and social services partner to reduce gang violence; developed a comprehensive strategy involving schools, businesses, and the faith community; and created an entity or task force to track the work once a plan is developed. Communities have gotten close to their vulnerable youth by having police and social services know gang members' names so they can stop them, help them, and show them they care.
