How is chorionic villus sampling (CVS) carried out?
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) is similar to amniocentesis but is carried out between the 9th and 12th week of pregnancy. A small syringe is inserted through the vagina into the uterus and sucks out some threadlike projections (villi) from the outer membrane that envelops the amniotic sac and fetus. Results are available within days. CVS has not been used as frequently as amniocentesis because CVS carries a slightly greater risk of miscarriage.
