Discuss and analyze the patterns of immigration to Latin America as well as patterns of emigration from Latin America after independence in the 19th Century
What will be an ideal response?
After independence white Europeans were recruited to settle in Latin America (L.A.) and mix with local populations with the goal of "whitening" the population. There were several countries that succeeded with this to a considerable extent–Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. Migration to L.A. from Asia was also important in the 19th Century and into the 20th Century. Many Japanese and Chinese were recruited to work on sugar and coffee plantations in Brazil. More recent Asian migration has been from Korea. There are also distinct patterns of migration within L.A. and shifting economic and political conditions largely shapes the patterns. Mexico sends the largest number of immigrants to the U.S.
