The Redbook, A Manual on Legal Style, is currently in its 3rd edition as of 2013. First published in 2002, this manual has helped many in the legal profession understand and apply the various rules of writing. The easy-to-read chapters are broken down into multiple sections, including Mechanics (which includes the rules of punctuation), Grammar, Usage, and Editing (which includes grammar, wording, editing and proofreading), Legal Documents (which includes research memos, case briefs, legal letters, motions, and judicial opinions), and Scholarly Writing (which includes instruction on student research papers and law review articles). The book is written in what has been referred to as "Restatement Form," meaning that the black-letter rules are followed by multiple examples demonstrating the rules in action, similar to the format of the Restatements of Law.
