In the past, software packages for Linux and UNIX were available in compressed tar archives called tarballs or in cpio (copy in/out) format, which is another type of archive format. However, these formats had no features for upgrading or uninstalling software, and installation was tedious, requiring users to remember lengthy and complex commands. In addition, there was no standard installation procedure that could be used with all software packages. To address these shortcomings, package management utilities were developed.
